Writing Prompt Series #1: "The Strange Door"

the strange door
The strange door

Prompt:
While walking home one evening, you come across a door in the middle of a field—no walls, no building, just a door standing alone. You’ve passed this field many times before, and this door has never been there. The door is slightly ajar, and from the other side, you can hear faint whispers and strange sounds. Do you open it? What happens next?

How to Approach the Prompt:
Here’s a little guide to help you dig deeper into the scenario and turn this prompt into a compelling story:

1. Describe the Setting:

Start by painting a vivid picture of the environment. Is it daytime or night? What kind of field is it—grassy, barren, or filled with wildflowers? This is your chance to set the tone. Is the scene eerie or serene?

2. Character Motivation:

Introduce your character. Why are they walking through this field? Are they rushing home, or are they deliberately taking a leisurely walk? What emotions do they experience when they see the door? Curiosity? Fear? Disbelief?

3. Build the Suspense:

As the character approaches the door, build tension. What do the whispers sound like? What strange sensations or smells come from the other side? You could keep it mysterious or begin to reveal a bit about what’s behind the door.

4. The Decision:

The key moment is whether the character opens the door. What goes through their mind as they stand before it? Do they hesitate or rush forward? And if they do open it, what do they see? Is it another world, a long-lost memory, or something unexpected?

4. Twist or Resolution:

End with a twist or an unexpected revelation. Did they step through the door, or did something come out? Leave the reader in awe, and remember—there are no rules! This is where your creativity truly shines.

Example Response:

Here’s a short snippet to get your inspiration going:

The sun was setting behind the hills when I saw it—an old wooden door standing tall in the middle of the field. Its rusty hinges creaked as a light breeze blew past, and a faint, eerie whisper echoed from the crack in the doorframe. I’d walked this path a hundred times before, and not once had I seen this door.

My heart raced as I took a hesitant step closer. The whispers grew louder, but I couldn’t make out any words. Just soft, indistinct murmurs that chilled me to my core. With trembling hands, I reached out and pushed the door open. Beyond it, there was nothing but a dark void.

But then, a hand reached out from the darkness...

Challenge Yourself:
Try to write for 15-20 minutes without stopping. Let your ideas flow freely, and don’t worry about perfection—this is all about exploration and creativity. Once you're done, take a moment to read through and see where your story took you.

Five Common Mistakes Every New Writer Makes

Avoid These 5 Common Mistakes Every New Writer Makes      Every writer, at some point, has faced the dreaded blank page, struggled with self-doubt, or wondered if their writing is good enough. But if you’re just starting out, there are a few common pitfalls you can avoid right from the beginning.      Here are the top 5 mistakes new writers make and how to sidestep them: 1. Overthinking the First Draft : It’s easy to get caught up trying to perfect every sentence before moving forward. But this can stunt your creativity and kill momentum. Remember, the first draft isn’t about perfection—it’s about getting your ideas on paper. Next time, try setting a 20-minute timer and write without stopping. You might be surprised by how much more productive you feel! 2.  Not Defining the Purpose of Writing : Jumping into a piece without a clear goal can lead to scattered content. Before you write, take a moment to define what you want to convey. Ask your...

NASA’s Quest to Touch the Sun

NASA’s Quest to Touch the Sun The outer layers of the sun’s atmosphere are a blistering million degrees hotter than its surface. NASA sent a probe to find out why—by getting closer to the star than ever before. Taken from Wallper Den. THE ORIGINAL VERSION   of   this story   appeared in   Quanta Magazine . Our  sun  is the best-observed star in the entire universe. We see its light every day. For centuries, scientists have tracked the dark spots dappling its radiant face, while in recent decades, telescopes in space and on Earth have scrutinized sunbeams in wavelengths spanning the electromagnetic spectrum. Experiments have also sniffed the sun’s atmosphere, captured puffs of the  solar wind , collected solar neutrinos and high-energy particles, and mapped our star’s magnetic field—or tried to, since we have yet to really observe the polar regions that are key to learning about the sun’s inner magnetic structure. For all that scrutiny, however,  o...
